Motif Investing, available for free on iOS, is a great app for those just starting to play the market. It lets users tinker in very narrow sectors to invest in by allowing them to choose between 90 different portfolio options.

Motif analyzes trends, world events, and ideas that could turn into potential investment opportunities and uses that information to create balanced portfolios. Your only job is to figure out which portfolios suit your interests and then customize them by adjusting the weight of each stock option.

If you have trouble keeping track of your own finances, consider checking out Level for iOS and Android. It’s a simple budgeting app that uses your banking and credit card info to create a budget for the current day, week, and month.

You can tweak each budget to your liking if Level’s suggestions won’t work for you. You can also set up a savings plan if you need help budgeting for a vacation or major purchase like a new home. As an added bonus, you’ll receive an alert if you happen to overspend so you can tone it down a bit. It’s easy to use, available on T-Mobile devices and other providers, and free, so what have you got to lose?

Most people could use a little help saving money. SavedPlus, available for free on iOS and Android, makes it easy to accumulate a nice cash cushion by depositing a percentage of every purchase you make into a savings account, prepaid card, or IRA.

For example, if you set the app up to save 10% of every purchase you make, $10 will be moved from your checking account to your savings each time you spend $100. Users have reported saving up to $350 a month just by spending money!

Of course, you can adjust your settings to limit what sort of transactions the savings apply to, and you can set a minimum balance in case you’re running low on funds and don’t want any additional money taken from your account.

Earmark

It’s nice to be rewarded for good decisions. Earmark is free for iOS and Android, and it gives you incentive to meet your financial goals by rewarding you for not splurging.

Each time you pass up on a frivolous purchase, such as eating out rather than cooking at home, you can deposit the money you save directly into an account earmarked for a particular goal. Even if you don’t want to transfer the money, you can still keep track of your savings to motivate you to spend smarter.
